Light & Shadow Apartment living area

This family apartment in Uherské Hradiště explores the contrast between light and shadow. Dark surfaces give the space depth, while timber and soft textiles bring calm. The result is a considered home where every detail has its place.

01 / ABOUT THE PROJECT
Contrast in balance.

The interior of this family apartment in Uherské Hradiště is built around a deliberate contrast between light and dark surfaces. The aim was not to create a theatrical backdrop, but a calm and functional home with clear architectural logic. The layout connects a generous living area, private rooms, bathrooms and storage into one legible whole. Each room has its own atmosphere while following a shared material and colour concept. Clean lines are complemented by the natural textures of timber, stoneware and soft textiles. The result is an interior that feels confident yet remains comfortable for everyday life.

READ MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT

The living area is designed as an open space for the family to spend time together. The kitchen with its striking island forms a strong focal point and connects naturally to both the dining table and lounge. Darker kitchen surfaces create depth, while light walls, generous glazing and timber elements keep the space airy. The furniture layout preserves comfortable movement and uninterrupted views. Lighting is layered for different situations: task lighting supports the kitchen, local fixtures define the dining area, and indirect light creates a calmer evening atmosphere.

Bespoke furniture is not treated as a separate addition but as a continuation of the architecture. Built-in units use the full height of the rooms, conceal the required storage and help maintain visual order. Timber cladding connects surfaces, doors and storage solutions into continuous lines. Open shelves and precisely positioned niches add lightness and room for personal objects. Materials were selected for their tactile quality, maintenance and long-term use. The contrast between matt and subtly reflective surfaces works with daylight and emphasises proportions without unnecessary decoration.

The bathrooms continue the same material language, with each responding to a different household need. The main bathroom uses darker tones, large-format surfaces and integrated lighting to support a calm, intimate character. The children’s bathroom is brighter and more practical, with a double washbasin and enough room for shared morning routines. Black fittings, concealed technical elements and clean material junctions create precise detailing. The design also considers comfort, easy maintenance and logical storage for everyday items without disturbing the overall order.

The private part of the apartment is calmer and softer in material expression. The bedroom and walk-in wardrobe form a coherent zone with integrated storage and subdued lighting. The children’s rooms have their own identity while remaining part of the shared concept. Desks, beds, bookcases and play elements are arranged so the rooms can evolve with the children’s needs. Colour accents appear selectively, mainly in textiles, graphics and smaller furniture. The neutral foundation prevents the interior from feeling crowded and makes it easy to add personal layers over time.

The project shows that strong contrast does not have to produce a hard or cold interior. The key lies in proportion, the amount of natural light and the way dark elements are combined with timber and soft surfaces. Every solution was assessed from both aesthetic and practical perspectives. Lighting positions, furniture junctions, storage capacity and technical details were developed as part of one coordinated design. This approach reduces improvisation during delivery and helps preserve the original intent from the floor plan to the final detail.

Everyday usability was equally important. Circulation routes remain clear, work surfaces provide enough space and storage is located where the family naturally needs it. Lighting responds to different times of day and allows the atmosphere to change without disrupting the core composition. The neutral material palette provides a stable framework for personal objects, art and colour accents that may evolve over time. The interior is therefore not a fixed image of one moment, but a flexible environment prepared for long-term living. It is the combination of a clear concept, technical preparation and precise detailing that gives the project its calm, timeless character.
